RPR serology is a non-treponemal test used to detect the presence of non-specific antibodies that may indicate infection with Treponema pallidum, the organism responsible for syphilis.

Preparation:

Procedure:

A venous blood sample is taken for testing.
The sample is tested for the presence of non-treponemal antibodies.
Considerations:

The RPR test is sensitive but not specific for syphilis; positive results can be obtained for a variety of reasons other than syphilis, such as viral infections, pregnancy, or some autoimmune diseases.
Positive results require confirmation with specific treponemal tests, such as the syphilis-specific antibody test (FTA-ABS, TPHA, among others).
It is an initial screening test and is used to assess the need for further testing and an accurate diagnosis of syphilis.
